Weifang Deaf-mute School in Shandong Province, based on the local rich traditional intangible culture resources, offers more than 10 intangible culture craft courses to these hearing-impaired students, improves their ability, and trains them to be the high-rank and skilled craftsmen after graduation.

 

Reporter made a survey into Weifang deaf-mute school recently. A dozens of students are concentrating on their crafts in pottery, paper-cut, cloth, porcelain and other different intangible culture craft workshops. According to Chen Fumin, director of the vocational education department of the school, these hearing-impaired students owns stronger hands-on ability and good concentration due to the physical defaults, are in line with the characteristics of skillful craftsman. Since 2006, the school has set up porcelain engraving, mounting and other craft courses to improve students' ability. For 12 years the school is exploring in the intangible culture curriculum construction, teaching approaches innovation and employment guarantee system promotion.

 

The physical and mental characteristics of hearing impaired students with strong hands-on ability and good concentration fit with the characteristics of intangible culture craftsmanship and high skill.

 

Chen Fumin told the reporter that Weifang deaf-mute school was, as same as the most special education schools in the past time, emphasizing subjects knowledge and underestimating skills training.  The graduates cannot meet to the social life needs and employment requirements. "The school gradually realizes that it is necessary to renew the idea of running a school, change the teaching method, and pay more attention to training skills while imparting knowledge, so as to meet the employment requirements and the need to obtain a high quality of life ."

 

 

Chen Fumin said that after the cautions research, experimental pilot and deepening exploration, the school took local intangible culture characteristics into the consideration, learned from the concepts of modern apprenticeship, innovated the intangible culture curriculum under the help of arts and crafts association, Qilu intangible culture industry incubator and other industry forces, established the intangible culture inheritance and training base, in where guides hearing-impaired students to improve their artistic literacy, integrating into normal social and cultural life, to provide students more employment opportunities to help them upgrade to be high-end, skilled artists.

At present, Weifang deaf-mute school graduates have engaged in intangible culture craft industry accounted for 30. Through investigation and analysis, the initial income of intangible culture graduates is basically the same as that of other industries, and the income after three years is higher than that of other industries. In 2018, the school won the title of "Chinese excellent Culture and Art Inheritance School ", and became the first batch of" intangible culture campus education heritage practice base ".
